The U.S. Army Made a Pokemon-Inspired Seizure Ray Gun

An infamous episode sparked the Pentagon's imagination.

One of the many non-violent weapons the Pentagon secretly developed and then ditched over the years was a ray gun inspired by ... Pokemon.

io9points out this engrossing Wired report about the U.S. military's development of non-lethal weaponry in an attempt to appease the news media's coverage of their campaigns and to keep body counts and collateral damage down.

"In 1998, a secret Army intelligence analysis suggested a new way to take out enemies: blast them with electromagnetic energy until their brains overload and they start to convulse. Amazingly, it was an idea inspired by a Pokemon episode [the first season episode translated as "Electric Soldier Porygon," which caused mass seizures among hundreds of Japanese viewers when aired in 1997]. Application of 'electromagnetic pulses' could force neurons to all fire at once, causing a 'disruption of voluntary muscle control,' reads a description of a proposed seizure weapon, contained in a declassified document from the Army’s National Ground Intelligence Center. 'It is thought by using a method that would actually trigger nerve synapses directly with an electrical field, essentially 100% of individuals would be susceptible to seizure induction.'"

Basically, somewhere in the military-industrial complex is an entire department of Lucius Foxes inventing cool, non-lethal weapons and gizmos that will never be used until some billionaire, would-be crimefighter comes along looking for an arsenal.

Other shelved non-lethal weapons developed by the Army’s National Ground Intelligence Center include a microwave gun that can cause "fevers," various cyberweapons, and a radio-based "Voice of God" device aimed at planting a suggestion in someone's mind.

Here's a clip from the infamous Pokemon episode, so watch it at your own risk and don't blame us if it does work since we're not making you watch it!!!! Seriously!!!!! BE CAREFUL!

Yikes. :P Better than them using the Brown Noise? There are lists out there of sci-fi inventions that have become real. Pretty cool!
